This week, 17-23 June, is National Volunteers week in New Zealand. We're showing our appreciation for the people who have selflessly given their time to help support The Marlborough Bat Recovery Program, at the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, a cause which is near and dear to our hearts.
The devastating and ongoing decline in New Zealand’s bats is a result of the mammalian predators (e.g. possums, rats, mice and stoats) that arrived with humans.
Due to the effort of these volunteers, we have successfully caught 12,451 critters since the trapping Program started in 2010. The biggest culprits, as you can see are rats, which accounted for 44% of total critters trapped.
